CSS-Dynamac, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Marine Turtle Program, and the University of Central Florida conducted quarterly netting surveys in Mosquito Lagoon for two federally listed threatened and endangered species: the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Both species use the lagoon as a developmental and feeding habitat during parts of their life histories. We netted sea turtles; measured, weighed, and photographed them; used passive integrated transponders to tag the turtles permanently; collected blood from each specimen for sex determination, hormone analysis, and genetic stock assessment; and used a GPS and Loran C instrumentation to record the location of each capture for future inclusion in an ARC/ORACLE database.
